Navigating the world’s roads

An automotive navigation system is a satellite navigation system designed for use in cars. Such a system usually uses a gps to obtain position data in order to to locate the user on a road in the device’s map database. The system then can give directions to other locations in its database. This type of technology has been around since the 1990s; the company Magellan, a gps navigation system manufacturer has stated that it was the first to create a gps-based vehicle navigating system in the U.S. in 1995. The U.S. Government made an accurate gps signal for civilian use in the year 2000. Features of navigation systems include top view or bird’s eye view…

Safer Driving – Save Those Brakes

© fym1321 - Fotolia.com

Do you love using your brakes? Do you drive quickly up to junctions and slam them on hard? Perhaps you always drive really close to the car in front so you can give them a quick stab every time it slows down. And every time you speed up and slow down you waste fuel, increase the wear on your car and even risk causing an accident. It is worth thinking how you can be a better and safer driver. This gives you and your passengers a smoother ride, saves money on fuel, reduces polluting engine emissions and can also reduce stress, lowering the risks of serious illness. Imagine there is an egg under your brake…

Repairing a car

It’s important to keep a car well maintained and in a good state of repair, even the smallest of problems can become a big (and costly!) one, if it isn’t addressed quickly. Simple car repairs can often be done at home, by someone who has an interest in cars and maintenance. Local colleges often run short courses for all ages in basic car repair and maintenance. Examples of simple repairs which someone with a little experience can complete include replacing a battery – simply buy a replacement and reconnect the wires. Similarly, replacing windscreen wipers is an easy task, as is doing an oil change. However, for bigger repairs and more serious issues, such as…

Look after those car windows!

© pringels - flickr.com

We all know that car maintenance is a chore. With winter drawing in, who really wants to be out in the cold, checking oil and tyre pressures and so on? Even in fair weather, we can think of a thousand other things we’d rather be doing, right? Unfortunately I’m sure we’d also agree that it is necessary- as usual, prevention is much better than cure. Car windows can often be overlooked in any vehicle maintenance regime, but a chip on your windscreen can be both distracting and dangerous. To help prevent chips or cracks, keep your distance from the car in front, make sure wipers are in good condition, and if possible, park in a…

Car accidents

The last thing anybody will want to think about is having a car accident, but unfortunately it happens to the majority of us at some point in our lives. At this time of year and with Winter just around the corner, it’s really important to put extra care into your driving, so that you don’t cause an accident yourself, especially when the ice and frost sets in. Having been in a car accident myself only last year, I know how frightening it can be and how powerless you can feel, knowing hat when another car drives into you, there is not an awful lot that you can do about it. That’s what happened to me….

Ensuring your car is safe in winter

© Mathias Wennergren - flickr.com

Winter brings snow, ice, rain, and windy weather, so it is important to ensure the car is ready for any eventuality. First of all, check the tyres. Make sure they have enough grip on them and that the pressure is suitable for wintery conditions. The owners manual has details of tyre pressure requirements. If your area is hit by bad snowstorms, consider whether snow tyres would be a good investment. Next, make sure the windscreen wipers are in good condition. If not, change them. There’s nothing worse than driving and having streak marks across the screen. Similarly, top up the wiper fluid, and keep it topped up, not only does it clean the windscreen, but…

The Car Battery

The battery which is in cars is there to provide electrical energy. This vital piece of the mechanism is rechargeable. The battery provides power to the starter motor, the ignition and the lights of the vehicle. Inside the battery The battery is usually lead acid and is made up of six cells in a series. Each cell provides 2.1 volts. Heavier vehicles such as tractors are likely to have two batteries to cope with the increased weight. Inside the battery a chemical reaction occurs which recharges the battery. The initial state is lead dioxide which is a crystallized brown powder and when the electrons flow through the conductors creating electricity this turns the state into…

Driving in Snow

“Some countries have the luck of never having to prepare for the snow, while for others it is an annual event. For example, Russians, as we go into Winter, are having to change their car tyres ready for driving on snowy roads. A tyre change is just one consideration for the snow. Driving in snow requires several preparations. You should always carry a pair of snow chains in your car if you are travelling to an area where snow might fall. In addition you should always make sure that your antifreeze levels and battery power are OK and check that your defroster and rear window defogger work. Furthermore, you should buy a snow shovel and…
